Glass Skills Australia encourages school leavers to take advantage of industry demand

As the job market tightens with positions at a premium, graduate Year 12 students across Australia should consider a rewarding career in the thriving glass and glazing industry, says leading training provider Glass Skills Australia.

The Australia Jobs 2015 report indicates that 85.5% of apprentices and trainees are employed six months after completion. This figure is even higher in the glass and glazing industry.

With many new projects being approved and the requirement for more glass to be used in modern building, demand for apprentices is high. Examples of new projects include buildings required for new medium rise apartments, casino and Commonwealth Games venues.

Glass Skills Australia Managing Director Bob Carter said many high school students feel pressured to undertake tertiary education, missing out on the vast opportunities in trades.

“Studies show upon graduation, a third of students are still uncertain about the career choice they have made and around one in five university students will drop out of university or change their courses within the first year,” he said.

“Glass and glazing is a trade often not considered by students but it is one filled with benefits and vast employment potential,” he said.

Through its on-the-job delivery of training, Glass Skills Australia is increasing the number of skilled glass and glazing professionals in Australia, particularly in regional areas.

“Previously students in regional areas had been limited to their apprenticeship options due to courses requiring them to attend training in metropolitan areas,” he said.

“Our trainers work with our students at their workplaces, meaning they do not have to cover travel costs and employers don’t lose time from having apprentices off site.

“I encourage school leavers who are undecided about their future careers to consider pursuing a career in the glass and glazing industry.”

Top benefits of an apprenticeship in glass and glazing:

  1. Job security as the need for more and more glass in buildings becomes more prevalent

  2. Job variety – rarely a day goes by where you are in the same workplace

  3. Glass technology is getting smarter – glass can now be used as an electricity generator, interactive computer interfaces, switchable between clear and solid light barrier

  4. Opportunities for advancement – factory manager, project manager, estimator, technical sales representative

  5. The opportunity to own your own your own business once qualified
